The mission of Springfield Home for the Elderly is to ensure, through the Mason-Wright Retirement Community (www.masonwright.org), that seniors have the opportunity for independent and dignified lives as part of an authentic community that includes affordable housing, quality services, nutritious food, and engaging social programs. This is accomplished through a comfortable and healthful home-like environment in which they are treated with dignity and respect while receiving the assistance they need to continue to be as independent as possible
Founded as the Springfield Home for Retired Men in 1897, Springfield Home for the Elderly has a rich legacy of caring for the retired seniors of Springfield and surrounding cities and towns for over 100 years. Staying true to founder Primus Mason’s creative spirit, the modern day facility was built with a strategic for-profit/non-profit partnership and is the ONLY 100% low-income credit project of its kind in the Commonwealth and possibly the nation. The project serves as a national model for utilizing non-traditional financing to provide assisted living for the elderly poor and is known as the Mason-Wright Retirement Community (www.masonwright.org).
Springfield Home for the Elderly is also an important component of the local neighborhood; housing an adult day care center, a children’s day care center, and a neighborhood senior center.
Utilizing a little strategic creativity and a lot of commitment, we are proud of what we have been able to accomplish so far. We hope that other communities and other states can learn from our experiences.
